It is the first procedure that should be applied in refinement.It includes hydration of crude oil in principle .Phospholipids , proteins , gums and anhydrides can dissolve in crude oil because of their drought structure . But they lose their solubility when hydrated .Hydratable phospholipids are removed from oil easily but unhydratable phospholipids are removed through an acid treatment.
